Jazz duo Robert Sánchez and Ellis Zipperer-Sánchez captivated a large crowd at their February 2 EAC Sunday series concert and Q&A. After the music, series co-organizer (with Marged Higginson) Greg Biss asked 16-year-old Ellis to talk about how he improvises, finding a different road each time through a tune. Ellis smiled and shrugged, "I just do it," he said, and attendees laughed and clapped.

Biss announced to the gathering that Ellis has been accepted to study at the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy, in Michigan, an incredible opportunity. Biss recalled that 72 years ago, he spent a transformative summer studying at the school. Ellis and family are hard at work fundraising to allow him to pursue these studies; those interested in helping are asked to email rsanchez@shead.org. The weekend after the EAC event, Ellis received perfect (100%) scores at the District 6 jazz competition at Ellsworth High School, and has qualified for the Maine State Jazz competition in March.
