Summer Sunday Series
​​The 2026 slate of events has yet to be finalized, but previous programs show the scope of this series. Combining literary and visual arts with the natural world was a presentation on great white sharks and the book Chasing Shadows by author Ret Talbot and scientific illustrator Karen Talbot. Michelle Shores discussed her book The Gathering Room, a tale of a specter that appeared in 1799 in Downeast Maine.

Through our bimonthly Summer Sunday Series, the Literary Arts Program features presentations on a variety of topics ranging from local and indigenous history to nature talks to Downeast literary works. This series draws experts from our local communities to explore and celebrate the richness and uniqueness of Downeast Maine.

Calais attorney and historian Al Churchill discussed the Saxby Gale of 1869, a “tropical cyclone” that caused massive devastation in Downeast Maine and the Maritimes.
