Time Travel to Tin Pan Alley

Join us at the Eastport Arts Center on Sunday, September 20 at 3 pm when the Time Travel Trio - Scott Cleveland, Dan Barrett, and Ann Delaney - present Time Travel to Tin Pan Alley! This unique docu-concert will cover celebrated standards written by Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, and the Gershwins during the golden Jazz Age of the 1920s. Along with performing songs, the trio will discuss the stories behind the composers and the performers of the area, including Al Jolson, Fanny Brice, and Billy Rose. Many of these songs recently entered the public domain, prompting the trio to put together this show and share the associated history with The Great American Songbook with audiences throughout the midcoast region.

This performance has sold out in other venues (including at the Eagle Hill Institute in Steuben) and audiences have been consistently thrilled with it. It will be performed on the main stage upstairs with the Steinway piano in full form.

About the Performers

Dr. Dan Barrett teaches trombone, jazz courses, and directs the Jazz Studies program at the University of Maine, including directing the UMaine Jazz Ensemble. He has been privileged to perform with great jazz musicians like Bob Mintzer, Conrad Herwig, Andy Martin, John Fedchock, Thomas Gansch, Ingrid Jensen, Phil Markowitz, Eric Marienthal, and Byron Stripling, and was a national finalist in the Music Teachers National Association Brass Solo and Chamber Music competitions. Dr. Barrett performs often with the UMaine Faculty Jazz ensemble, and recorded the album Putting a Groove on a Bad Situation with them in 2021. His latest album, with Scott Cleveland, Kyle Jordan, Ross Gallagher, and Mike Bennett, Upward and Anywhere, was released in 2026. He also performs with Swingmatism, Deb’s Little Big Band, the Nu-Force Big Band, and several other local groups. He leads the Maine Trombone Collective and the Maine Brass Guild, two large ensembles that perform throughout the state, and also teaches at the Maine Summer Youth Music camp. Dr. Barrett is the author of Solo Training for Trombone, a book of exercises based on standard solo repertoire for high school and college students, published by Mountain Peak Music.

Scott Cleveland is a composer/singer/pianist/music educator/church musician/writer. He holds a B.M. in Music Education from Berklee College of Music, an M.M. in Music Theory/Composition from UMassLowell and a M.Div. from Boston University School of Theology. He has produced six independent solo albums (scottcleveland.bandcamp.com) and performs original and reinterpreted Jazz/ R&B/Blues/Fusion/Rock as a solo pianist and singer and in numerous ensembles, including The University of Maine Jazz Faculty ensemble. From Fall 2019 until Spring of 2025 he was on the Jazz Faculty at the University of Maine, teaching Elementary Harmony I and II, Jazz Theory Fundamentals, Jazz improvisation privately and coaching Jazz combos. He has taught Songcrafting and the Jazz improvisation clinic “Composing in Fast Motion” for Bagaduce Music. Singer Ann Delaney grew up in Hammond, Louisiana and Springfield, Ohio playing flute, guitar, piano, and cello before focusing on vocal study in high school. After college, Ann focused solely on jazz singing and began performing in the Columbus, Ohio club scene. She quickly gained a reputation for her repertoire of lesser-known jazz gems and versatile sound. Today, Ann lives in Downeast Maine and continues working and performing with talented musicians from the Midwest, New England, and New York City. Ann’s first album, “From This Moment On” was released in October 2023. She appeared on “The Nite Show with Danny Cashman” in 2024 and joined Nite Show bandleader Brian Nadeau as a singer in his Nu-Force Big Band. Ann regularly performs with The Time Travel Trio, a group devoted to reviving the history of Tin Pan Alley hits. And she joined the adjunct faculty at The University of Maine's Jazz Studies program in 2026.
