The Revival of the Passamaquoddy Language with Dwayne Tomah

Language is integral to identity, particularly for Indigenous peoples where language is tied to place. In this special presentation by Dr. Dwayne Tomah, we will hear about the progression of the efforts to preserve and restore the Passamaquoddy language. A short film will be shared highlighting this work.

About the Presenter

Dwayne Tomah is a Language Keeper of the Passamaquoddy Tribe and is the youngest fluent speaker of the Passamaquoddy language. He has been deeply involved in the revival of the Passamaquoddy language through his work with wax cylinder recordings taken by Jesse Walter Fewkes (being the oldest field recordings in the world), working closely with the Library of Congress as he does so.

Dwayne has worked on the Passamaquoddy dictionary, filmed a segment with Animal Planet sharing the history of the Thunderbird, and helped to create the Passamaquoddy Language app. He shares Native legends through song and dance, and presents locally and regionally on the Doctrine of Discovery and its ongoing effects.
