About the event
Join us for a special screening of The Last Forests Project on Wednesday, May 27 with Dr. Robin Hadlock Seeley presenting the film and guiding discussion afterward.
"This film from the west coast of the USA describes their lost kelp bed forests and ways communities are working together to bring kelp forests back," writes Dr. Seeley. "We in Maine are also losing kelp forests. And intertidal rockweed forests are being degraded." Viewers are invited to consider what can be learned from the West Coast experience with their last (kelp) forest along with what actions can be taken to protect the ecological integrity of the kelp and rockweed forests that still exist in eastern Maine.
About the film:
For thousands of years, prolific Kelp Beds have spanned across the Northern California coastline, providing some of the most beautiful and biologically diverse and productive ecosystems on earth. Between 2014 and 2018, a series of prolonged environmental stressors and imbalances led to the loss of over 90% of kelp forests between San Francisco and Oregon.
The Last Forests Project is a grassroots visual journey through the causes and effects of this ecosystem collapse, as well as the scientific and community efforts in place to help bring back our kelp forests.
This educational film bridges the gap between the science and the public, aiming to be the eyes and voice for the forests that we cannot see fall.
