About the event
Quoddy Voices, the Eastport-based international community chorus, will present their winter concerts on December 7 and 8 at Eastport Arts Center.
Led by Gene Nichols with accompanist Jane Lanctot, a large and robust group of singers has been rehearsing a program highlighting female composers and songwriters since September. Shows will be at 7 pm, Saturday, December 7, and 3 pm, Sunday, December 8.
Director Gene Nichols has been a musical presence in Downeast Maine for nearly a half century, as educator, performer, composer, and director. He taught music at UMM for 35.5 years; has led circus bands and choruses; and writes and directs the Machias Wild Blueberry Festival musical. He plays at Cobscook Institute’s music circle and with improv group Les Trois Etoiles, and directs a ukulele all star group. He took the helm of Quoddy Voices in fall 2023, and has thus far presented two programs of eclectic and exciting music. Gene notes, “Vocal harmony is the purest music there is.”
Accompanist Jane Lanctot has a varied musical performance background, including studying and teaching classical Cambodian music all over the U.S. In the past few years she has focused on modern piano and fortepiano, as well as producing 'Round the World with Cracklin' Jane', a radio program which has been syndicated in the US, Canada, and the UK. Recent triumphs have included organizing the annual Bold Coast Variety Show in Lubec, and introducing local children to radio production via outreach efforts with the Lubec Area Musicians' Philanthropic Society. She serves on the Machias Bay Area Chamber Concerts Board.
Tickets for the Quoddy Voices concerts are $15; attendees 17 and under will be admitted free of charge; no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Tickets may be purchased via the link below, or at the door beginning 30 minutes prior to each performance. PLEASE NOTE: Online ticket sales will close at 5:45 pm; EAC box office will open for ticket sales at 6:30 pm.
Quoddy Voices welcomes all singers, and does not require an audition. The group will resume rehearsal in preparation for spring concerts in February. Inquiries about the group may be made to Nichols at gnichols@maine.edu.
Eastport Arts Center is at 36 Washington Street, Eastport, and is handicapped-accessible.
