About the event

An exhibition, “Audubon Down East, 1833,” will open Saturday, May 23, in the Washington Street Gallery with a talk by Melinda Jaques starting at 3 pm. The exhibition was curated by Jaques and historian Colin Windhorst, who wrote the text panels that guide viewers through the story of Audubon’s adventures in Eastport and beyond. It will remain viewable through June 28 during events at EAC.

After spending the month of May exploring the waters surrounding Eastport and Grand Manan, Audubon sailed on the Ripley with five young men, who served as assistants, for Labrador on June 6 and returned to Eastport on August 30.  Audubon hoped to identify and draw the water birds and any possible new species for inclusion in his great work, the Birds of America.

The exhibit will include reproductions of Audubon’s original hand-colored engravings and watercolors that were collected and drawn in Eastport and Labrador.  A record of all stops and points of interest made on the round trip, plus a map, will be included in the exhibit.
