About the event
This talk by Erine Leigh will detail the events of the ill-fated Nottingham Galley’s shipwreck on a treacherous outcropping known as Boon Island and the ultimate rescue of starving sailors. We will discuss the cannibalism that occurred while the survivors, desperate for survival, awaited rescue, as well as the differing accounts of the shipwreck, and subsequent events, written by several survivors.

About the Presenter

Erine has extensive experience of the region where Boon Island is located, has visited the island by boat (without disembarking), and is familiar to Eastport listeners who attended her somewhat similar talk about the murders on Smuttynose Island. She has read extensively all existing accounts of this shipwreck and looks forward to sharing her source material with the audience.
Erine Leigh is a seacoast writer who served as poet laureate of Portsmouth, NH from 2015 to 2017. She has a passion for both poetry and coastal New England history.
