Area Writers to Read at ArtWalk event June 22

On Thursday, June 22nd at 6 pm, local writer Catherine J.S. Lee will host Writers Read, an evening at Eastport’s Phoenix Fine Wines with six Washington County authors reading selections from their published works. Chuck Kniffen, Danielle, Woerner, Fran Drabick, J.D. Rule, Jnana Hodson and Sherry Christie will share works ranging from haiku to memoir to historical fiction. All authors will have books available for sale and signing. This reading is a joint presentation by Eastport ArtWalk and the Eastport Arts Center (EAC). Last fall, a literary arts committee formed at the EAC with an eye to increased local offerings in the literary arts and more exposure for regional and Maine-wide authors. Workshops and author readings have been held with more to come.  A national poetry contest on the subjects of forest and ocean is accepting submissions through June 30th, with judges Heather McHugh (adult poetry) and Molly MacDonald (student poetry) selecting the winning poems. Monetary prizes will be awarded thanks to the generosity of summer resident Charles Moore. The EAC Writers’ Group, facilitated by EAC executive director Meg Colbert and local writers Paula Horvath and Catherine Lee, was established in January of this year. About a dozen writers gather biweekly to comment on each others’ manuscripts while enjoying a variety of snacks provided by the members. New members are welcome and may contact Colbert at writers@eastportartscenter.org for more information. A second ArtWalk literary night will be offered on Thursday, August 3rd.   For complete schedule of Eastport & Lubec ArtWalk events, please visit: eastportartwalk.org
